Prayer Power

(I actually composed this in September 2005, but I deem it appropriate to include it here as additional musings about Truth.)

So much has been said about the power of prayer.

Let me equate prayer with faith because it is the vocal expression of faith in the power of God.

However, in James 2:20 and 2:26 the phrase "faith without works is dead" recurs. The reminder is that even as we pray very very hard, we still have to go into action to make that prayer come alive.

How do we act or work out the prayer we lift to God?

In our present situation, the main issue against GMA [Gloria Macapagal Arroyo] transcends the economic-political realm. It has become a moral issue. Branding the accusations against the president as political maneuverings to destabilize the administration is obfuscating the main problem of morality. The leader must lead by example. A leader who lies and cheats encourages subordinates to do likewise in all affairs. To tolerate cheating, so long as it is not "massive", is not to be the accepted norm in public and private affairs. In James 2:10, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

So far, we are witnesses to the perversion of the oath. For instance, Secretary Bunye [the Press Secretary of the President] swore in Congress to tell the truth the whole truth so help him God, and yet his testimony about his behavior in presenting the two tapes to journalists was not the truth. And the discrepancy was captured in video clips. The question is: did Congress charge him for committing perjury? I have yet to see any action against him.

How do we pray to morally purge our country of untruthful leaders?

Invoking the saying Vox Populi Vox Dei (the voice of the people is the voice of God), that the Lord made her President, is blasphemous. Manipulating the results of elections is manipulating Vox Populi and polluting it such that it is no longer Vox Populi, much more Vox Dei. Thus, even if she indeed won, but adding more votes to what she really got is still rendering Vox Populi a perjury of Vox Dei.

Perhaps, the satyagraha method of the Mahatma Gandhi might work. Instead of mere protest rallies that are vulnerable to anti-riot actions, we have to organize peaceful prayer rallies that will cordon, say, Malacanang Palace and pray aloud to God to purge our government of liars and cheats. Instead of composing songs that make fun of our leaders, there is need to compose serious prayers exorcising evil from our society.

This is the time for our religious leaders, in whatever denomination, to exercise their prophetic duty of ridding our corrupt leaders through mass prayer rallies.

I've said my piece. As a retired military officer I do not have the religious stature to organize, lead any prayer group, and succeed. I can only join in the effort in exorcising the evils of our society.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

God bless all your days.
